Chocolate Butter Frosting

This is a simple yet classic frosting that is very easy to make.  This recipe will fill and frost a 2 or 3 layer cake, one 13x9 inch cake, or 24 to 30 cupcakes. Spread extra frosting between graham crackers for a yummy snack.

Chocolate Butter Frosting

Ingredients:

Frosting:

1/3 cup unsalted butter, room temperature

4 cups confectioners (powdered) sugar

½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

¼ cup milk, plus additional if needed (preferably whole milk)

1½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Directions:

Frosting:

  1. In a medium mixing bowl, use an electric hand mixer or wooden spoon and beat the butter until smooth. Add 2 cups of the powdered sugar and cocoa; beat until smooth. Slowly beat in ¼ cup milk and vanilla. Add the remaining powdered sugar; beat until frosting is smooth and creamy. Add additional milk if necessary to make a good spreading consistency.

  2. Using an offset spatula, spread frosting between layers and over top and sides of cake.
